What is teeth bleaching?

Teeth bleaching is the whitening of teeth by utilising bleaching agents. Whitening can mean restoring the colour of teeth to its natural shade or beyond it, depending on the requirement.

There are numerous reasons, mostly related to our lifestyle habits, that contribute to staining of teeth. Below are some of the causes:

  • Chewing or smoking tobacco.
  • Drinking dark coloured beverages such as coffee, tea, cola or some types of wine.
  • Not maintaining oral hygiene.
  • Aging (with age, the enamel of teeth gets thinner, thereby darkening the dentin).

Things you should know before going ahead with teeth whitening

Cavities need to be treated before teeth are whitened. This is because the solution / product used for whitening may reach the deeper parts of teeth through decayed areas, causing more damage.

Whitening products do not work on the roots of the teeth so if your gums have receded, the roots that are exposed would still look yellow or discoloured even after you whiten the teeth.

Teeth whitening techniques

Major techniques of teeth whitening include bleaching strips, bleaching pen, bleaching gel and laser teeth-whitening. Cosmetic Dental Clinic takes pride in offering a 1 hour bleaching treatment that has long lasting effects.

Bleaching methods usually use carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Carbamide peroxide is claimed to be less effective than hydrogen peroxide, but has fewer side effects.
